Detroit Music Collective and Portfolio Medics Seek Feedback About Local Music Ecosystem Through Census

Two organizations are seeking feedback from the community about the Detroit music ecosystem.

The Detroit Music Collective and Portfolio Medics are conducting the Greater Detroit Music Census, a survey designed to gain a deeper understanding of the current state and future needs of the local music ecosystem.

“The questions for the census are tailored to give us an idea, collectively and comprehensively, what the local ecosystem looks like,” said Kevin Kay, founder and CEO of the Detroit Music Collective.

“It’s never been done here before, but the response from everyone so far has been: ‘Wow! This is something that we need.’ Everyone seems to be rallying together for an initiative like this.”

Launched earlier this month, the census is being administered by Sound Music Cities. It’s free to take and open to people 18 and older working in music within a 75-mile radius of the city.

“This is your chance to use your voice,” Kay said. “If there’s something bad, say it. If there’s something good, say it. Please don’t candy-coat it to think that you need to answer everything in a positive way. The only way we make change is if we know there are problems, and that’s what’s happened in all the other cities that have done the census so far.”

Sound Music Cities has previously administered censuses for Cleveland, Nashville, Charlotte, Austin, and Columbus, Ohio.

“Nashville did their census last year, and one of the things coming out of there from the creative sector and the artists were big complaints about how there are no loading or unloading parking spaces at venues, especially if they’re playing downtown,” said Kay, who once worked for Sony Music Nashville.

“They’re parking four or five blocks away sometimes, and if it’s summertime, they’re hauling gear, and they’re sweating. The organization that helped create the census for Nashville took the data, sat down with the city and the mayor’s office, and presented it to them. The city is now working on designating [parking] spots.”

The census is also receiving support from three lead partners, including Detroit Techno Militia, D.Cipher, and Detroit Nightlife United, and several community partners.

Shifting Gears – Nashville’s Eric Ripper Charts a New Course on ‘Look for a Sign!’ Album

Eric Ripper prefers to leave the past behind and embrace the road ahead.

The Nashville, Tennessee singer-songwriter explores changing life’s course on “Drive,” the steadfast opener from his latest album, Look for a Sign!

“I’ve just realized that a lot of my life has been from moving around, following a dream, and giving into that motivation,” said Ripper, who hails from Northville, Michigan.

“I was sick of sitting around claiming I was doing something and not following through. In this case, it was moving to Nashville.”

Backed by determined electric guitar, bass, and drums, he sings, “Well, I’m not here for a long time / And I ain’t standing still / Well, I’m just here for a good ride / And this is how I steer.”

“It just means I’m not on this earth for a while, and I need to move around and follow this direction,” he said. “I guess you could say it was the final motivation for my move to Nashville.”

Not only does “Drive” reflect Ripper’s recent motivation, but it also includes a lyric that inspired the album’s title: “It’s hard to choose the route for you / Look for a sign.”

Drive” was the second-to-last song we worked on. After hearing it over and over, we decided that it had to be the opening track,” said Ripper, who relocated to Nashville in 2023.

“As a fast, upbeat song, it introduces the theme to everything [that’s on the album], and the repeated lyric only made sense as the [album’s] title.”

Double Feature — Jazz Vocalists Olivia Van Goor and Caity Gyorgy Co-Host June 3 Duet Show in Grosse Pointe

In 2020, Olivia Van Goor formed an unexpected friendship through social media.

The metro Detroit jazz vocalist stumbled upon Caity Gyorgy’s infectious single “Postage Due” and contacted the Canadian jazz singer about including the track in her songbook.

“I couldn’t believe it wasn’t a standard … she was kind enough to send me her music, and so I added that song among others to my repertoire,” Van Goor said.

“It’s important to me to not only keep the tradition alive by doing standards but to introduce my audience to other composers, especially females and especially vocalists. We have never performed together—in fact, we’ve never even met in person.”

That circumstance will quickly change with Van Goor and Gyorgy co-hosting a June 3 duet show at Grosse Pointe Unitarian Church (GPUC) in Grosse Pointe, Michigan.

“Caity reached out a couple of months ago while planning her shows in the U.S. this summer. She proposed a duo show in the Detroit area, and when possible venues fell through for me, I had to figure out how to do it myself,” said Van Goor, who’s producing the show.

“Scott Gwinnell, who is playing the gig with us, recommended the GPUC, and I think it is a fabulous choice. I enjoy so much about her music, but my favorite thing about it is her fresh nod to standards in a very bebopish way. Not a lot of vocalists are doing that, and I am all about that!”

Cautionary Tale – Edison Hollow Combats Destructive Forces on New ‘Body’s Guest’ Single and Video

Edison Hollow sternly warns about a pending demise on “Body’s Guest.”

The Detroit hard-rock quartet of Tyler Chernoff (vocals, guitar), Jordon Stockdale (lead guitar), David Vida (bass) and Aaryn Lindow (drums) confronts a friend about destructive behaviors on their new cautionary single and video.

An impenetrable force of steadfast electric guitars, bass and drums protect Chernoff as he sings, “Your pride will be what kills you / You just can’t let it go / Oh no time left to convince you / You got nothing to show / So much time spent / Your body’s guest.”

We recently chatted with Edison Hollow about their new release as well as their background, previous album and singles, live shows and upcoming plans.

New Single and Video 

TSS: Your new single, “Body’s Guest,” chronicles a person’s unwillingness to face the consequences of their actions. What initially inspired this track for you sonically and thematically?

Edison Hollow: Musically, “Body’s Guest” was a step forward for us as a band and as songwriters. We had a riff from Jordon [Stockdale], and we built the rest of it together, just doing what felt right to us. Lyrically, the melodies flow with the dynamics of the music, the verses are very remorseful and express feelings of pity and regret, and the choruses are defiant and strongly proclaimed like the music that lies beneath those sections.

From the get-go, we wanted a Halloween-adjacent release for this [track] since we recorded it. It just has that feel to us, and we had a clear idea of how we wanted the release to go and the video that accompanies it.
