pia the band is right where she needs to be.

The Detroit indie-rock singer-songwriter shares that realization on her hopeful new single, “I Have Everything.”

“I think at first glance over and maybe with intention when I first wrote it, you can look at the song as definitely being inspired by loss. Maybe bigger than that … that sadness or loss you feel when things don’t really pan out the way you expect them or hope at the time,” said Pia-Allison Roa, aka pia the band.

“As everyone knows, life doesn’t always go as planned, and usually it goes in a way better than you could have imagined. That realization and affirmation that you have everything you need at this moment in time are what I hope people can reflect on to move forward and let go of what their expectations were.”

Backed by soft drums, thoughtful bass and determined electric guitar, pia the band sheds those past expectations and embraces the present as she sings, “I’m trying not to bum you all out / But every time I open my mouth / I convince myself believe / I have everything I need.”

“By the end of the song and after the huge instrumental, I repeat that phrase [‘I have everything I need’] again a couple of times, and to me, it’s a confirmation of ‘Yes, I actually do believe that I do have everything I need,’” Roa said.

“I find myself so many times being in situations with good friends, or being at the beach on a nice day, or even as silly as eating a good burger and being like, ‘Whoa, yup, I have everything I need right now.’”

pia the band started writing and refining “I Have Everything” last summer on stage with her bandmates. In January, she reconnected with producer/multi-instrumentalist Ben Collins of Minihorse and recorded the track in his Ypsilanti home studio. The two had previously collaborated on her singles “Old Days” and “Stranger.”

“We jammed to it and tried to configure it into something we could play live. I fell more in love with that song the more we played it over the summer because of the realizations I was having with it,” Roa said.

“I brought [Ben Collins] all the tracks I wanted for my [upcoming] EP, and we both just worked over a month to get the backbones of each song (four to be exact). It was fun spending long days with Ben and watching him work his magic on songs I had started with just me and a guitar.”

The track also features the musical “magic” of two pia the band collaborators—Slapslap’s Cameron Wilson (drums, percussion) and Adam Liles (guitar).

“I met Cameron after playing a solo set at The Lexington, and he offered to play drums if I ever needed a full band. He ended up doing drums on two of the four songs on the EP, including ‘I Have Everything’ even before I had ever heard him play drums live and before we all played as a band,” Roa said.

“In a similar fashion, Adam reached out to me asking if I needed a guitarist, and I was a fan of his previous band The Indigo Curve, who I got to open up for a couple of months prior. I quickly wanted to get Adam to record the guitar parts he made during our rehearsals.”

As a follow-up to the single, pia the band will bring “I Have Everything” to life visually with a new lyric video in July. Filmed by Zach Nahshel, the video will feature footage of a recent trip pia the band took to Drummond Island with friends.

“Something I started taking away from the song this year … was the fact that I did have everything I need, and being with friends on a trip up north showcased that perfectly,” Roa said.

“Zach and I then had the idea to take a digital camera and film the trip as well as other gatherings our little friend group has. It’ll be cool to juxtapose some of the lyrics with genuinely memorable, nice and fulfilling moments with my friends.”

Looking ahead, pia the band will share the stage with her friends Wilson, Liles, bassist Riley Kirkpatrick and keyboardist/multi-instrumentalist Jane Rogers at several upcoming live shows. They’ll perform July 22 at Detroit’s Lager House, July 31 at Detroit’s Outer Limits Lounge and Aug. 11 at Hamtramck’s Ghost Light.

“It’s been so fun jamming with them, and my songs have never felt more realized until I played with them,” Roa said.

“At [our] last practice, we talked about how we all have varying musical interests and inspirations that overlap with every person in the band, but not one central common inspiration. I think that really showcases how they bring my songs to life.”

In October, pia the band will release her debut EP Getting Better, which will include “I Have Everything” plus three other tracks.

“I wanted this EP to be a collection of where I’m at now and the sound I feel like I’ve been able to develop myself with the help of Ben [Collins] this past January. ‘I Have Everything’ sonically sets the tone for the EP by taking the sound of ‘Old Days’ and amping it up a bit,” Roa said.

“The guitar tones and the overall mood of the song can be something to expect for the other songs on the EP. All of the songs are ways I’ve been able to reflect on how I’ve been ‘getting better’ emotionally. Even looking back at some of the songs helps me feel that way.”
