Carolyn Striho and Scott Dailey focus on the journey ahead on their latest single.

For Carolyn Striho, the road of life is full of unexpected twists and turns.

But those challenges don’t prevent the Detroit singer-songwriter from moving forward.

That perseverance fuels some of the inspiration behind her latest blues-rock single, “14 Miles of Bad Road,” with husband/guitarist Scott Dailey.

“If you say you’ve been on 14 miles of bad road, it sounds far. When I wrote it, I was thinking more of being up north with roads all over the place,” Striho said. “When you think about it, it could be anywhere—a city or a town.”

Determined to reach their next destination, she sings alongside propulsive electric guitar, bass, organ, and drums, “I wish all the world could see you and me again / I wish all the world could feel like a friend again / I wish all the world could be like a kid again / I wish all the world … / I tried, my friend / You lied again / I tried again / You lied …”

“Scott came up with the lyrics, ‘I tried, my friend / You lied again,’ and it makes sense, meaning, ‘You thought there was a rosy picture of life, and when you’re young, everything seems so good,’” said Striho, who shares counterpoint vocals with Dailey on the track’s chorus.

“You also might think someone’s going to swoop in and make everything better if life’s not going well. That doesn’t always happen, though.”

Dailey also captures that feeling sonically through the track’s bluesy, fiery guitar solo. It drives home the importance of overcoming obstacles in your path.

“That song has been around for a while, and we played it in England the last time we were there,” said Striho, who recently released a new lyric video for the single. “We decided to finally finish it, and we made it more like a duo.”

Together, Striho and Dailey recorded the vocals, organ, electric guitar, and bass for “14 Miles of Bad Road” at home before heading to Canton’s Pearl Sound Studios to finalize it with producer Chuck Alkazian and drummer Lauren Johnson.

“By having a drummer, it just sounds so good the way it turned out with Lauren,” she said. “Since Chuck’s also a drummer, he knows how to get that drum sound in the studio.”

Outside of the studio, “14 Miles of Bad Road” marks another significant milestone for Striho: it’s the first of several new singles she’s releasing this year with Dailey. More recently, she’s focused on Detroit (Maiden Energy), her 2019 collection of lyrics and poetry, and the 2020 audiobook.

“I’m used to releasing things in the fall, and this is different having new music come out in the spring,” she said. “It’s been years since I’ve done that … it feels like a renewal, and it feels better.”

Striho and Dailey will bring that sense of renewal to the stage as well. They’re performing April 19 at Livonia’s Trinity House Theatre with Laura RainGeorge Friend, and Mary McGuire.

“A few years ago, we played together at the Mackinac Island Music Festival, and Mary was the director of it and was in charge of all of the booking for it. We were honored to perform there several times. We also got to know Laura and George from other shows,” Striho said.

“Mary, Scott, and I wanted to make the Trinity House show more of a festive night and then Laura and George came on board. Mary suggested it, and we thought it was a great idea.”

After the show, Striho will release her next single, “Blue Ridiculous Love,” on April 26. Other new singles will follow later this spring and summer.

“Hopefully, I’ll be able to put these songs out as part of a new album soon,” said Striho, whose last album included 2016’s Afterthought.
