Melanie Pierce boldly reclaims her power on “Enough.”
The Detroit singer-songwriter asserts her true feelings and finds closure from a past relationship on her new emo-pop single.
“‘Enough’ is a song that I’m very proud of, and I’m really thankful to have had music to lean on when the events behind the song were taking place,” Pierce said.
“The song is a reflection of events that hurt or things that at the time I looked at through rose-colored glasses. Then I pulled them off and said, ‘This sucked … and it’s enough for me to get over this and move on.’’”
Surrounded by fearless acoustic guitar, electric guitar, bass, and drums, she sings: “I poured my heart out and I wrote you songs / You felt awkward, said it’s like someone’s singing happy birthday to you / Someday, I’m gonna find someone who actually deserves all I do / So I reclaim every song I sent you and the magic you had access to / And the girl that would have done anything for you.”
“It’s a song that screams, ‘I don’t deserve this,’” Pierce said. “I hope the takeaway for listeners is exactly that. You don’t deserve the shit you’ve put up with and you’re stronger than this.”
I spoke with Pierce about her latest single ahead of an October 11 show at 20 Front Street in Lake Orion, Michigan.
Q: How are you doing? What’s been inspiring you lately?
A: I’m doing well! I’m excited about how the tour has turned out and the growth I’ve experienced this summer. Life, new relationships, and human nature have been inspiring me lately. I’m excited to take some time to reflect and rest this fall as I continue to write more music.
Q: It’s been a year since you released your debut EP, Stir Crazy. Looking back on it, what does the EP mean to you now?
A: Stir Crazy has been the biggest adventure so far! The EP is the reason [why] I’m touring now—which is so cool and wild to think about. When I was making it, I had no clue life would turn out this way, and I’m so grateful every day for it. I hope the EP continues to resonate with people who are in love, in lust, and figuring themselves out. We all get a little stir-crazy now and again.
Q: You collaborated with Jeremiah McWhorter (guitar, bass, production) and Mitch Crosby (drums) of Painted Friends on “Enough.” How did they help you shape the track’s overall sound?
A: Working with Jeremiah and Mitch has been so great. We have all become great friends, and so anytime I get to hang out with them, it’s a fun time. They work hard and have been huge creative inspirations. Jeremiah is one of the most talented musicians I’ve ever had the pleasure to work with. His ear and ability to bring a song to life are insane. We recorded everything except drums in his home studio and drums were recorded at JK (Not Kidding) Studios. Then Jeremiah mixed [everything] from his home studio. It’s been a great experience so far!
Q: You’re performing as part of a songwriter round with Jeremiah McWhorter and Brontë Fall on October 11 at 20 Front Street. What will each artist help bring to the show?
A: The upcoming songwriter round on October 11 at 20 Front Street was put together by my team at 40ficreations. We are excited about it since this is my first time playing there and playing a songwriter round in general. We’re each going to bring forth some great new music and we will be able to showcase that and share some stories with an intimate crowd of music lovers. It sounds like a version of heaven to me—I can’t wait.
Q: What’s up next for you? Any plans to write, record, and release additional new material soon?
A: Lots of new music is being born; I can’t wait for what 2025 has in store.
