Carolyn Striho cherishes the magical moments in life.

In those fleeting moments, the Detroit singer-songwriter feels grateful and inspired while spending time with others.

However, that magic often dissipates as people move on or pass away, but the love and appreciation from those interactions remain with Striho.

She beautifully shares that sentiment and a longing to recapture it in her new single, “Blue Ridiculous Love,” which features poetic lyrics and heartfelt rock instrumentation.

“I saw this song more as a painting, and with a painting, you’re interpreting it your way,” said Striho, who co-wrote the track with husband-guitarist Scott Dailey. “I’m talking about the ‘green grass of gold dirt,’ and it reminds me of one of the Beatnik poets, and you get these images.”

Surrounded by eager acoustic guitar, electric guitar, and drums, Striho sings, “I had this magic / It’s right on my side / Then everybody took a ride / The evening shadows / The tiny voice in my head / Starts talking louder / It’s an evil eye.”

“It’s a romantic song with an angst about the future and missing people, but it’s also about how falling in love can feel ridiculous,” she said.

”The lyric, ‘Everybody took a ride,’ could mean different things: They just left your life or they could have died. I had this magic, and I thought, ‘Wait, where did everybody go?’ It prompts you to look back and say, ‘Wait a minute, those people are gone.’”

Striho continues to examine that thought in the track’s second verse: “I saw the future / It’s dark and raining harder / I see the snow specks / Sleeping on the bed / That’s all you do now / The streets are glassy dirty / The paint is peeling / On the overhead.”

“While things are going well, there’s this ‘evil eye’ over things, and it means something bad is on the horizon,” she said.

“Also, with the lyric about ‘the future,’ I was thinking about the movie Blade Runner for some reason and how the replicants only have a four-year expiration date—but then again, we don’t know how long anybody has.”

Despite that uncertainty, Striho sprinkles optimistic references throughout “Blue Ridiculous Love,” including: “I’m kicking at the gold dirt with my ice cream” and “Your hands through my hair.”

“Now, the lyric, ‘I’m kicking at the gold dirt with my ice cream,’ is more of a positive thing, and I’ve reconciled that situation,” she said.

“There’s a little bit of love in there, too, with the lyric about ‘Your hands are through my hair, and the feeling of ‘love’ is in it. As a love song, it has a dreamy quality to it, but it’s also dark and beautiful at the same time.”

Striho not only captures that magical feeling thematically but sonically as well on the track. It features Dailey on electric guitar, acoustic guitar, and bass, and Lauren Johnson on drums.

“Scott and I recorded the vocals, guitars, and bass for the song at home, but then went to Pearl Sound Studios in Canton to record the drums with Lauren and Chuck Alkazian,” she said. “We’ve had some great people work on this new music with us.”

And speaking of new music, “Blue Ridiculous Love” is the second single from Striho since releasing “14 Miles of Bad Road” with Dailey in March. More recently, she’s focused on Detroit (Maiden Energy), her 2019 collection of poetry, and its 2020 audiobook.

“We’re excited to share these new songs because it feels like a renewal in a way,” said Striho, who’s also released a new lyric video for the song. “There’s something magical about putting out new music this time of the year.”

Outside of new releases, Striho and Dailey have several live shows lined up this summer, including June 7 at the Nor-East’r Music & Art Festival in Mio and June 23 with The Orbitsuns at Cadieux Café in Detroit.

“We just played fun shows at Trinity House Theatre with Mary McGuire, Laura Rain, and George Friend and the NFL draft with Ron Wolf,” she said. “We’re ready to get out there and play some more shows for people soon.”
